Plan your last-minute shopping with this essential guide to the opening and closing of major stores during the holidays.

Hours of operation in shopping centers for the festivities

Christmas Eve represents a peak of logistical and commercial activity, where precise planning is crucial to avoid setbacks. Although many preparations are made in advance, last minute purchases are a common reality. Therefore, having verified information about the special hours of the main retail chains and supermarkets becomes a fundamental element for efficient time management during these Christmas dates.

The following is a detailed analysis of the confirmed schedules for December 24 and 25, 2025 by the main companies in the sector in Mexico. This information, of a referential nature, is subject to change depending on the geographical location of each establishment, so a final verification is always recommended.

Specific hours for Costco, Sam’s Club and Walmart

The Costco chain has announced a significant adjustment to its usual schedule. For Wednesday, December 24, its warehouses will operate under reduced hours, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., closing several hours earlier than usual. In contrast, on Thursday, December 25, Christmas Day, all its branches will remain completely closed, without exception.

For its part, Sam’s Club will adopt a different operating strategy. On Christmas Eve, December 24, it will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. For the 25th, it will maintain standard business hours, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., allowing members to make purchases after the celebration.

Walmart, another retail giant, will also modify its shifts. On December 24, its stores will open from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The next day, Christmas, opening hours will be delayed one hour, operating from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., thus facilitating both emergency purchases and the replenishment of groceries.

Variations in Bodega Aurrerá, Oxxo and alcohol sales regulations

In the case of Bodega Aurrerá, the scheduling policy is decentralized. In general, it is estimated that on December 24 the stores will open between 7:00 and 8:00 in the morning, closing around 8:00 p.m. Given the possible variation by branch, direct consultation with the local establishment is the most reliable method to confirm.

The convenience store network Oxxo presents a similar situation. As there is no unified national schedule, the service depends on the location and the franchisee. While many stores operate 24 hours a day, others may reduce their hours during these holidays. The most effective tool to check the status is Google Maps or a phone call to the store of interest.

Regarding the sale of alcoholic beverages, the general regulations do not undergo extraordinary modifications for December 24 and 25. The authorized schedule remains from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. the following day. However, it is imperative to consider that each federal entity and municipality may have specific regulations that restrict or extend these periods. The usual weekly schedule (Monday to Thursday from 7:00 to 1:00, Friday and Saturday from 11:00 to 2:00, Sunday until 18:00) serves as a reference, but local legislation always prevails.

As a technical and safety recommendation, authorities and family logistics experts insist on purchasing in advance to avoid crowds and shortages. Likewise, the importance of responsible consumption of alcohol and, critically, the absolute abstention from driving under the influence is underlined, thus ensuring that the celebrations conclude safely and without incident.

March of teachers causes traffic chaos near the Azteca stadium

Teacher protest and strong police operation before the Colombia-Uzbekistan match.

Hundreds of teachers led a peaceful march to the Azteca stadium before the Colombia-Uzbekistan match for the 2026 World Cup. The police blocked access with concrete barriers, cranes and trucks to prevent their progress.

The mobilization did not reach the stadium, but it generated heavy congestion in the surrounding area. Those attending the game had to take a detour and walk several kilometers.

Security operation and official response

Some 11,219 troops were deployed in the capital, with reinforcements from horse police in Azteca. The Secretary of Security, Pablo Vázquez, reported that almost 8,000 would guard the stadium and the rest the historic center, where a festival of supporters was set up.

The deployment occurs six days after the protests during the opening of the World Cup, when teachers, searchers for the missing and activists demonstrated. On that occasion, the forces blocked their advance without major setbacks.

The National Coordinator of Education Workers called for new mobilizations to increase pressure. The federal government called the unions to a dialogue table.

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced teleworking in the public sector and suspension of classes in Mexico City and Guadalajara to avoid congestion during matches.

Groups of relatives of missing people have also protested to demand attention to the crisis that has accumulated 135,000 cases.
