The iconic Cher Horowitz returns (and this time it’s not a Super Bowl cameo)
Get ready, nostalgic millennials, because Alicia Silverstone is officially back in the role that made her the impossible dream of the ’90s: Cher Horowitz. Yes, the same one that taught us that plaid can be haute couture if you combine it with platform boots. The platform Peacock is cooking up a sequel series to Clueless (or Ni Idea for those who saw it dubbed), and this time it is not a low-budget reboot but a direct continuation. Translation? More chaotic matchmaking and outfits that defy the laws of physics.
Details that matter (because the devil wears Prada, but Cher wears Alaïa)
According to Deadline and Variety, the project will bring together the brains behind Gossip Girl (Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage) and Dollface (Jordan Weiss). Silverstone will not only act, but will also put his hands on the executive production, because of course, no one knows better the art of saying “As if!” with conviction. Amy Heckerling, the director of the original film, is also on board, ensuring that this sequel won’t be a Sex and the City: And Just Like That-style fail.
In case anyone doubted it: it is not the 2020 project where Cher disappeared and Dionne (Stacey Dash) played detective. That remained in limbo, like the Tamagotchis forgotten in a drawer. This time, the plot will follow the classic universe, although adapted to an era where smartphones would have ruined the drama of messages on the answering machine. Of course, CBS Studios (owners of the rights) already has experience in adaptations: between 1996 and 1999 they broadcast a series with Rachel Blanchard as Cher. Silverstone did not participate, but Dash did repeat his role, proving that some runners-up do survive the test of time.
The timing is perfect: Silverstone had already warmed up with her appearance as Cher in a Super Bowl 2023 advertisement. His publication on Instagram this Thursday (accompanied by vintage photos and the Deadline headline) confirmed it: “What a blast!… in the best way”. Non-ironic translation: “Yes, I did it, and you are going to love every second.”
While we wait for more details, the 48-year-old actress continues in multitasking mode: she is preparing Bugonia by Yorgos Lanthimos (the genius behind Poor Things), a Christmas comedy and the series Irish Blood. But let’s face it: nothing will beat seeing her saying “Ugh, so if!” in that tone that defines an entire generation.
