The irony that hurts more than bullets
Mario Hernández García, the mayor of Santiago Amoltepec (yes, that little town in Oaxaca that we all Google now), decided to give an exemplary speech on non-violence. Hours later, life—or rather armed individuals—responded with a macabre “hold my beer.” The setting? A place called El Tablero, which sounds like a picnic place but turned out to be the set of a horror movie. The state Prosecutor, in its eternal efficiency, confirmed the crime… after half of Mexico already knew about it on WhatsApp.
The details that no one asked for but we all need
According to witnesses (who are probably now covering their tracks), the councilor was returning from the festival of San Isidro —patron saint of farmers, because nothing says “blessing” like dying after a religious festival—. The attackers, experts in dramatic timing, ambushed him along with two companions. The time? Between 3 and 4 AM, because criminals in Mexico are so considerate that they kill you after letting you dance for a while.
Prosecutor José Bernardo Rodríguez, in a burst of unusual sincerity, admitted that Amoltepec is “historically unstable” (translation: a tinderbox). And although he said that they have made important arrests, he also said the phrase of the year: “we must strengthen the work in the area”. Thank you, Captain Obvious! Maybe starting by not letting the mayors be killed?
The speech that no one heard (until now)
The most tragicomic thing: hours before, the mayor had asked his citizens “to enjoy, dance and not bet on violence”. What advice! It’s a shame that bullets don’t understand morals. His message, worthy of a meme, included gems like: “there are always good things”. Except, apparently, in the final kilometer towards his town.
Governor Salomón Jara, a textbook Morenista, came out with a “there will be no impunity” (has anyone heard that before?). He promised support to the family and the Prosecutor‘s Office, because in Mexico promises are like drug messages: they multiply after each crime.
Moral: In this country, even a call for peace can sound like goodbye. And if you are an authority, it is better to avoid lonely roads… and optimistic speeches.
