The victory of the Mexican National Team against Australia (1-0) in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena not only extended the streak without defeat. Javier Aguirre resolved his doubts and defined the list of 26 called up for the 2026 World Cup. He also has in mind the starting 11 that will face South Africa.
“With Serbia what we see will be the closest thing to the last week of preparation for the match with South Africa, the objective was partially achieved because we had some left in the pipeline but I am very clear about those who are going to stay and those who are going to start on the 11th,” declared “El Vasco” in conference.
After several friendlies and a “parade” of players, Aguirre assured that he chose the best.
“I have been with the team for 20 months, I have been looking for them and in my opinion and that of my coaching staff it is the best we have found in a population of 60-70 players.”
The strategist avoided revealing whether the starting goalkeeper will be Raúl Rangel or Guillermo Ochoa. He pointed out that the 26 have real possibilities of playing: “It is a selection, it is not 11 starters and 15 substitutes.”
Tri’s next match will be on Thursday, June 4, against Serbia at the Nemesio Diez stadium in Toluca. That will be the last friendly before the debut against South Africa on June 11 at the Banorte stadium.
Without euphoria, Aguirre asks for calm
Players like Raúl Rangel, Erik Lira and Jorge Sánchez mentioned their desire for Mexico to be world champion. Aguirre, who will direct his third World Cup, opted for caution.
“We have to be cautious, I don’t like to deceive, I say what I think, but we have to go game by game.”
And he added: “I hope that this World Cup we give touches of joy that people need.”
Mexican referees ready for the World Cup
The FMF reported that seven Mexican whistlers with a FIFA Badge traveled to Miami to begin their training camp for the 2026 World Cup. The delegation includes two center backs, three assistants and two VAR officials. They are headed by César Arturo Ramos and Katia Itzel García.
